A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2024 is out: 447 price lines across 12 of 80 management units and 22 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved up this quarter; pulpwood held steady.

Up statewide: sugar maple sawtimber. Down: paper birch, basswood, black cherry.

Down statewide: mixed spruce, paper birch, basswood pulpwood.

Of the 133 state sales opened this quarter, 109 sold and 24 drew no bid — 18% — with 2.8 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2023) opened 152 sales, 47 no-bid — 31%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2023) opened 124, 12 no-bid — 10%.
