A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2023 is out: 508 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved up this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: black cherry, basswood, paper birch sawtimber. Down: sugar maple, mixed aspen, red pine.

Up statewide: tamarack, paper birch, northern white cedar pulpwood. Down: balsam fir, mixed hardwood, mixed aspen.

Of the 152 state sales opened this quarter, 105 sold and 47 drew no bid — 31% — with 2.5 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2023) opened 138 sales, 48 no-bid — 35%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2022) opened 108, 21 no-bid — 19%.
