A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2023 is out: 446 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 25 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved down this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: mixed aspen, paper birch sawtimber. Down: sugar maple, red maple, basswood.

Up statewide: tamarack, red pine, jack pine pulpwood. Down: mixed oak, balsam fir, basswood.

Of the 138 state sales opened this quarter, 90 sold and 48 drew no bid — 35% — with 2.2 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2023) opened 94 sales, 17 no-bid — 18%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2022) opened 149, 21 no-bid — 14%.
