A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2022 is out: 423 price lines across 14 of 80 management units and 24 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber held steady this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: white pine, basswood, sugar maple sawtimber. Down: white oak, mixed oak, red maple.

Up statewide: white pine, mixed hardwood, jack pine pulpwood. Down: tamarack, paper birch.

Of the 108 state sales opened this quarter, 87 sold and 21 drew no bid — 19% — with 3.7 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2022) opened 149 sales, 21 no-bid — 14%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2021) opened 150, 15 no-bid — 10%.
