A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2021 is out: 476 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved up this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: white oak, red maple, sugar maple sawtimber. Down: yellow birch, mixed oak, white pine.

Up statewide: paper birch, tamarack, mixed aspen pulpwood. Down: mixed hardwood, balsam fir, jack pine.

Of the 121 state sales opened this quarter, 107 sold and 14 drew no bid — 12% — with 4.2 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2020) opened 113 sales, 12 no-bid — 11%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2020) opened 145, 18 no-bid — 12%.
