A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2020 is out: 401 price lines across 13 of 80 management units and 23 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved up this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: white oak, red pine sawtimber. Down: yellow birch, basswood, mixed oak.

Up statewide: tamarack, balsam fir pulpwood. Down: mixed spruce, mixed aspen, white pine.

Of the 113 state sales opened this quarter, 101 sold and 12 drew no bid — 11% — with 3.8 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2020) opened 94 sales, 15 no-bid — 16%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2019) opened 123, 22 no-bid — 18%.
