The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2020 is out: 515 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 25 species.
The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved down this quarter; pulpwood held steady.
Up statewide: black cherry sawtimber. Down: basswood, red oak, beech.
Up statewide: mixed hardwood, red pine, mixed oak pulpwood. Down: mixed spruce, paper birch, northern white cedar.
Of the 145 state sales opened this quarter, 127 sold and 18 drew no bid — 12% — with 3.0 bidders on a sold sale on average.
The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2019) opened 123 sales, 22 no-bid — 18%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2019) opened 191, 31 no-bid — 16%.
