A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2019 is out: 438 price lines across 13 of 80 management units and 25 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved down this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: mixed aspen, white pine sawtimber. Down: red oak, paper birch, sugar maple.

Up statewide: white pine, red pine, jack pine pulpwood. Down: tamarack, balsam fir, basswood.

Of the 123 state sales opened this quarter, 101 sold and 22 drew no bid — 18% — with 2.6 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2019) opened 150 sales, 32 no-bid — 21%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2018) opened 161, 27 no-bid — 17%.
