A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2019 is out: 480 price lines across 17 of 80 management units and 25 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved down this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: white pine, sugar maple, red pine sawtimber. Down: mixed oak, basswood, red oak.

Up statewide: jack pine, red pine, mixed aspen pulpwood. Down: tamarack, balsam fir, paper birch.

Of the 150 state sales opened this quarter, 118 sold and 32 drew no bid — 21% — with 2.7 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2019) opened 149 sales, 32 no-bid — 21%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2018) opened 132, 14 no-bid — 11%.
