A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2019 is out: 467 price lines across 16 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved down this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: mixed oak, red oak, paper birch sawtimber. Down: basswood, red maple, sugar maple.

Up statewide: mixed spruce, mixed oak, basswood pulpwood. Down: white pine, tamarack, mixed hardwood.

Of the 191 state sales opened this quarter, 160 sold and 31 drew no bid — 16% — with 2.6 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2018) opened 161 sales, 27 no-bid — 17%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2018) opened 149, 20 no-bid — 13%.
