A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2018 is out: 496 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved up this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: basswood, red oak, mixed oak sawtimber. Down: mixed aspen, black cherry, red maple.

Up statewide: mixed oak, mixed aspen, balsam fir pulpwood. Down: basswood, paper birch, jack pine.

Of the 161 state sales opened this quarter, 134 sold and 27 drew no bid — 17% — with 2.9 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2018) opened 132 sales, 14 no-bid — 11%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2017) opened 150, 28 no-bid — 19%.
