A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2018 is out: 423 price lines across 14 of 80 management units and 25 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved down this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: mixed oak, red oak, basswood sawtimber. Down: sugar maple, red pine, red maple.

Up statewide: mixed oak, balsam fir pulpwood. Down: jack pine, tamarack, paper birch.

Of the 132 state sales opened this quarter, 118 sold and 14 drew no bid — 11% — with 3.0 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2018) opened 162 sales, 10 no-bid — 6%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2017) opened 220, 32 no-bid — 15%.
