A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for April to June 2018 is out: 533 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 28 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved up this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: mixed aspen, beech, sugar maple sawtimber. Down: white oak, mixed oak, red maple.

Up statewide: balsam fir, white pine, tamarack pulpwood. Down: jack pine, mixed hardwood, basswood.

Of the 162 state sales opened this quarter, 152 sold and 10 drew no bid — 6% — with 3.5 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jan–Mar 2018) opened 149 sales, 20 no-bid — 13%; the same quarter a year earlier (Apr–Jun 2017) opened 223, 25 no-bid — 11%.
