A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2018 is out: 461 price lines across 13 of 80 management units and 28 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber held steady this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: mixed aspen, basswood, red oak sawtimber. Down: paper birch, white pine, sugar maple.

Up statewide: white pine, mixed oak, mixed aspen pulpwood. Down: tamarack, northern white cedar, jack pine.

Of the 149 state sales opened this quarter, 129 sold and 20 drew no bid — 13% — with 3.2 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2017) opened 150 sales, 28 no-bid — 19%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2017) opened 171, 35 no-bid — 20%.
