A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2017 is out: 480 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved up this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: black cherry, basswood, red maple sawtimber. Down: paper birch, sugar maple, red pine.

Up statewide: basswood, mixed oak, white pine pulpwood. Down: balsam fir, mixed hardwood, mixed aspen.

Of the 150 state sales opened this quarter, 122 sold and 28 drew no bid — 19% — with 3.2 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2017) opened 220 sales, 32 no-bid — 15%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2016) opened 195, 28 no-bid — 14%.
