A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2017 is out: 521 price lines across 17 of 80 management units and 27 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber moved down this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: basswood, white pine, red oak sawtimber. Down: red maple, sugar maple, red pine.

Up statewide: mixed aspen, white pine pulpwood. Down: paper birch, jack pine, red pine.

Of the 220 state sales opened this quarter, 183 sold, 5 carried no result on the DNR’s bid summary and 32 drew no bid — 15% — with 3.0 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2017) opened 223 sales, 25 no-bid — 11%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2016) opened 162, 27 no-bid — 17%.
