A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2017 is out: 655 price lines across 17 of 80 management units and 30 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Down statewide: sugar maple, mixed oak, red pine sawtimber.

Up statewide: red maple, mixed aspen, mixed oak pulpwood. Down: balsam fir, quaking aspen, white spruce.

Of the 171 state sales opened this quarter, 130 sold, 6 carried no result on the DNR’s bid summary and 35 drew no bid — 20% — with 3.7 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2016) opened 195 sales, 28 no-bid — 14%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2016) opened 173, 32 no-bid — 18%.
