A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2016 is out: 534 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 31 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: mixed oak, sugar maple sawtimber. Down: red pine, red maple, red oak.

Up statewide: red maple, mixed aspen, balsam fir pulpwood. Down: red oak, quaking aspen, mixed softwood.

Of the 195 state sales opened this quarter, 155 sold, 12 carried no result on the DNR’s bid summary and 28 drew no bid — 14% — with 2.9 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2016) opened 162 sales, 27 no-bid — 17%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2015) opened 113, 16 no-bid — 14%.
