A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2016 is out: 465 price lines across 14 of 80 management units and 28 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Down statewide: sugar maple, red maple, bigtooth aspen sawtimber.

Up statewide: black spruce, jack pine pulpwood. Down: mixed hardwood, mixed aspen, red maple.

Of the 162 state sales opened this quarter, 134 sold, 1 carried no result on the DNR’s bid summary and 27 drew no bid — 17% — with 3.1 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2016) opened 148 sales, 19 no-bid — 13%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2015) opened 105, 12 no-bid — 11%.
