A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2014 is out: 368 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 24 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: sugar maple, red maple sawtimber. Down: red pine.

Up statewide: mixed aspen, red pine, mixed hardwood pulpwood. Down: jack pine.

Of the 98 state sales opened this quarter, 86 sold and 12 drew no bid — 12% — with 3.5 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2014) opened 129 sales, 18 no-bid — 14%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2013) opened 144, 38 no-bid — 26%.
