A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2014 is out: 384 price lines across 17 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: red pine sawtimber. Down: sugar maple.

Up statewide: jack pine, red maple, red pine pulpwood. Down: mixed softwood.

Of the 129 state sales opened this quarter, 111 sold and 18 drew no bid — 14% — with 3.7 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2014) opened 232 sales, 26 no-bid — 11%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2013) opened 118, 37 no-bid — 31%.
