A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2013 is out: 325 price lines across 16 of 80 management units and 24 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: red maple, sugar maple, red pine sawtimber.

Up statewide: mixed hardwood pulpwood. Down: mixed aspen, red pine, jack pine.

Of the 144 state sales opened this quarter, 106 sold and 38 drew no bid — 26% — with 2.7 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2013) opened 118 sales, 37 no-bid — 31%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2012) opened 181, 20 no-bid — 11%.
