A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2013 is out: 321 price lines across 13 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: red maple, sugar maple sawtimber. Down: red pine.

Down statewide: jack pine, mixed softwood, mixed hardwood pulpwood.

Of the 118 state sales opened this quarter, 81 sold and 37 drew no bid — 31% — with 2.8 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2013) opened 226 sales, 22 no-bid — 10%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2012) opened 172, 18 no-bid — 10%.
