A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2012 is out: 442 price lines across 16 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: red maple, red pine, red oak sawtimber. Down: sugar maple.

Up statewide: red maple, bigtooth aspen, mixed aspen pulpwood. Down: quaking aspen, white pine, jack pine.

Of the 181 state sales opened this quarter, 161 sold and 20 drew no bid — 11% — with 3.0 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2012) opened 172 sales, 18 no-bid — 10%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2011) opened 122, 2 no-bid — 2%.
