A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for April to June 2012 is out: 446 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 27 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: red maple, sugar maple, red oak sawtimber. Down: basswood, mixed aspen, red pine.

Up statewide: white pine, paper birch, bigtooth aspen pulpwood. Down: mixed oak, mixed aspen, mixed hardwood.

Of the 219 state sales opened this quarter, 210 sold and 9 drew no bid — 4% — with 4.2 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jan–Mar 2012) opened 166 sales, 8 no-bid — 5%; the same quarter a year earlier (Apr–Jun 2011) opened 231, 3 no-bid — 1%.
