A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2011 is out: 364 price lines across 14 of 80 management units and 27 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: sugar maple sawtimber. Down: red maple, red oak, red pine.

Up statewide: quaking aspen, red pine, jack pine pulpwood. Down: red maple, mixed aspen.

Of the 122 state sales opened this quarter, 120 sold and 2 drew no bid — 2% — with 4.3 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2011) opened 164 sales, 11 no-bid — 7%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2010) opened 131, 4 no-bid — 3%.
