A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2011 is out: 368 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 22 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: red pine sawtimber. Down: sugar maple.

Up statewide: jack pine, red maple, mixed hardwood pulpwood. Down: bigtooth aspen, quaking aspen.

Of the 164 state sales opened this quarter, 153 sold and 11 drew no bid — 7% — with 4.6 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2011) opened 231 sales, 3 no-bid — 1%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2010) opened 127, 3 no-bid — 2%.
