A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2010 is out: 389 price lines across 16 of 80 management units and 23 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: sugar maple, basswood sawtimber. Down: red oak, red pine.

Up statewide: mixed softwood, quaking aspen, mixed aspen pulpwood. Down: bigtooth aspen, jack pine, mixed hardwood.

Of the 208 state sales opened this quarter, 198 sold and 10 drew no bid — 5% — with 5.0 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2009) opened 151 sales, 17 no-bid — 11%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2009) opened 223, 25 no-bid — 11%.
