A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2009 is out: 291 price lines across 16 of 80 management units and 23 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Down statewide: red pine, sugar maple, mixed oak sawtimber.

Up statewide: jack pine, mixed aspen pulpwood. Down: mixed hardwood, red pine, mixed oak.

Of the 151 state sales opened this quarter, 134 sold and 17 drew no bid — 11% — with 4.2 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2009) opened 133 sales, 22 no-bid — 17%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2008) opened 88, 7 no-bid — 8%.
