A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2009 is out: 317 price lines across 16 of 80 management units and 24 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Down statewide: red pine, mixed oak sawtimber.

Up statewide: red maple pulpwood. Down: mixed hardwood, red pine, jack pine.

Of the 133 state sales opened this quarter, 111 sold and 22 drew no bid — 17% — with 3.2 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2009) opened 210 sales, 33 no-bid — 16%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2008) opened 139, 12 no-bid — 9%.
