A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2009 is out: 329 price lines across 14 of 80 management units and 23 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: basswood, red oak sawtimber. Down: sugar maple, red pine.

Up statewide: bigtooth aspen, jack pine, mixed hardwood pulpwood. Down: black spruce.

Of the 223 state sales opened this quarter, 198 sold and 25 drew no bid — 11% — with 3.6 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2008) opened 88 sales, 7 no-bid — 8%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2008) opened 181, 11 no-bid — 6%.
