A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2008 is out: 228 price lines across 15 of 80 management units and 18 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: mixed oak sawtimber. Down: red pine, sugar maple.

Up statewide: red pine, mixed hardwood pulpwood. Down: jack pine, mixed oak, mixed aspen.

Of the 88 state sales opened this quarter, 81 sold and 7 drew no bid — 8% — with 4.5 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2008) opened 139 sales, 12 no-bid — 9%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2007) opened 250, 38 no-bid — 15%.
