A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for July to September 2008 is out: 254 price lines across 13 of 80 management units and 20 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved up.

Up statewide: red pine sawtimber. Down: mixed oak.

Up statewide: mixed hardwood, red pine, quaking aspen pulpwood. Down: red maple, mixed aspen, black spruce.

Of the 139 state sales opened this quarter, 127 sold and 12 drew no bid — 9% — with 3.9 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Apr–Jun 2008) opened 178 sales, 11 no-bid — 6%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jul–Sep 2007) opened 278, 46 no-bid — 17%.
