A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for January to March 2008 is out: 372 price lines across 16 of 80 management units and 24 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood moved down.

Up statewide: red oak sawtimber. Down: sugar maple, red pine.

Up statewide: mixed oak, quaking aspen pulpwood. Down: red pine, jack pine, bigtooth aspen.

Of the 181 state sales opened this quarter, 170 sold and 11 drew no bid — 6% — with 3.3 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Oct–Dec 2007) opened 250 sales, 38 no-bid — 15%; the same quarter a year earlier (Jan–Mar 2007) opened 171, 46 no-bid — 27%.
