A quarterly summary of timber-price trends, reporting coverage and state timber-sale activity. Detailed prices and calculations are available to subscribers.

The MI DNR stumpage price report for October to December 2007 is out: 410 price lines across 16 of 80 management units and 26 species.

The Michigan Timber Index for sawtimber has no reading for this quarter; pulpwood held steady.

Up statewide: red pine sawtimber. Down: mixed oak, red oak, sugar maple.

Up statewide: mixed hardwood pulpwood. Down: jack pine, mixed oak, red pine.

Of the 250 state sales opened this quarter, 212 sold and 38 drew no bid — 15% — with 3.3 bidders on a sold sale on average.

The previous quarter (Jul–Sep 2007) opened 278 sales, 46 no-bid — 17%; the same quarter a year earlier (Oct–Dec 2006) opened 104, 29 no-bid — 28%.
